Welcome to Broken Land
a collection of photo-illustration and poetry
Our Foundation is Always Shifting... As humans, we operate on a daily basis under the assumption that the ground beneath our feet is stable. The truth is that stability is relative, and the foundations of our lives — geological and otherwise — are constantly in flux. That the land under us moves and reforms itself serves as a perpetual reminder that the only thing that remains the same is change. Our world — even its dirt and mud and rocks — is a living, breathing matrix of elements forever orbiting and lusting after homeostasis. Proximity and Expanse... The artwork of Broken Land mixes photos I took of the area about 1-2 square miles from my home in central Maryland. Over the year I worked on this project, I ended up going through a divorce, during which I left a marital home and moved into an apartment nearby. My world seemed small — for months, I rarely had to or wanted to leave the small radius of my neighborhood. I walk and run frequently, and found that the natural world within my reach served as an unending source of comfort and wonder during an emotionally tumultuous time. I came to believe that there is divine magic inherent in every natural thing, and that opening myself up to that magic helped me move forward in a constructive way.
